How to use the Drywall Sheets Calculator

  1. Enter room length, width, and wall height.
  2. Tick "Include ceiling" if you are boarding it.
  3. Subtract openings — each standard door is about 21 ft², each window ~12 ft².
  4. Pick sheet size: 4×8 for standard walls, 4×10/4×12 for 9–10 ft ceilings.

Formula & methodology

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height. Ceiling = length × width. Sheets = (area − openings) ÷ sheet area × (1 + waste).

Example

A 12×10 ft room with 8 ft walls and ceiling, minus 80 ft² of openings: (352 + 120 − 80) = 392 ft² → 12.25 sheets of 4×8 — buy 14 with waste.

FAQ

How do I account for doors and windows?

Standard interior door ≈ 21 ft², exterior ≈ 20 ft², average window ≈ 12 ft². Enter the total in the openings field — over-deducting slightly is fine since waste covers it.

4×8 or 4×12 sheets for 9 ft ceilings?

4×10 or 4×12 sheets run vertically with no horizontal seam — fewer seams, faster finishing. 4×8 is fine if you do not mind a butt joint at 8 ft.

Do I need moisture-resistant board on ceilings?

Use ⅝ in Type X board for garage ceilings under living space (fire code in many areas) and green/purple board in bathrooms. Standard ½ in works elsewhere.

Why does the screw estimate matter?

Screws cost little but running out mid-hang is annoying — the estimate (~1.25/ft²) sizes a bulk box so you never do.
