How to use the Ceiling Tile Calculator
- Measure the room's length and width at the ceiling.
- Enter your panel size — 24×48 in (2×4) and 24×24 in (2×2) are the standard drop-ceiling formats.
- Keep 10% waste for border cuts and damaged corners.
Formula & methodology
Panels = (room length × width) ÷ panel area × (1 + waste). A 2×4 ft panel covers 8 ft²; a 2×2 covers 4 ft². Border tiles usually need cutting — that is what the waste covers.
Example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 2×4 panels: 120 ft² ÷ 8 ft² = 15 panels — buy 17 with 10% waste (3 boxes of 8).

How do I calculate border tiles?
The 10% waste allowance covers standard border cuts. For rooms with many odd angles, measure each edge run and add panels explicitly.
2×2 or 2×4 ceiling tiles?
2×4 needs less grid and installs faster; 2×2 looks busier and hides sag/unevenness better in older basements. Both calculate the same way here.
How many tiles come in a box?
Commonly 8 for 2×4 tiles and 12–24 for 2×2 — check your product; the calculator rounds up to full boxes.
