How to use the Shower Tile Calculator

Measure one wall's width and height, then set the number of tiled walls (typically 3).
Add the shower floor area if you are tiling it.
Deduct the door/opening area so you do not buy tile for thin air.
Small tiles (like 3×6 subway) mean more cuts — keep the 10% waste.

Formula & methodology

Wall area = width × height × number of walls. Total = walls + floor − openings. Tiles = Total ÷ ((tile L + gap) × (tile W + gap)) × (1 + waste).

Example

Three 5 ft × 8 ft walls plus a 15 ft² floor minus a 12 ft² door: 123 ft². With 3×6 subway tile and ⅛ in joints you need about 300 tiles — roughly 11 boxes at 12 ft².

Do I include the shower ceiling?

Only if you are tiling it — steam showers often do. Skip it otherwise; the floor-area field is for the shower pan only.

What is a niche and does it change the count?

A recessed shelf adds a little tile (its box walls). Treat it as extra — one extra square foot per niche is a safe pad.
