Formula & methodology
Each layer: Volume = Area × depth; Weight = Volume × material density (~96–105 lb/ft³ depending on stone). Total = sum of layers.
Example
A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway with 4 in base + 2 in middle + 1 in pea gravel surface: 160 + 80 + 40 = 280 ft³ ≈ 10.4 cu yd total, roughly 14 tons.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?
7–10 inches total after compaction for cars: 4 in base, 2–3 in middle, 1–2 in surface. Heavier vehicles need a thicker base.
What is the best gravel for a driveway surface?
Crusher run (quarry process) with fines compacts into a firm surface; pea gravel looks nicer but rolls and ruts. Many driveways use crusher run with a thin pea-gravel topping.
Do I need fabric under a gravel driveway?
Geotextile fabric is strongly recommended on soft or clay soil — it stops the stone from sinking into the mud and roughly doubles driveway life.
How many tons of gravel for a driveway?
