Formula & methodology

Volume = Area × Depth. Weight uses a typical crushed-stone density of ~100 lb/ft³ (1.35 tons per cubic yard). Bag count assumes 0.5 cu ft bags (about 50 lb).

Example

A 20 ft × 10 ft path at 2 in deep: 200 ft² × 0.167 ft ≈ 33.3 ft³ ≈ 1.23 cu yd, weighing about 1.7 tons — or 67 fifty-pound bags.

A cubic yard of typical crushed gravel weighs roughly 2,500–3,000 lb (1.25–1.5 US tons), depending on stone type and moisture.

How deep should gravel be?

Decorative paths: 2 inches. Driveways with a base: 4–6 inches (in layers). French drains: enough to surround the pipe, usually 8–12 in of excavation.

How do I convert cubic yards to tons?

Multiply cubic yards by about 1.35 for crushed stone. The calculator includes this conversion automatically.

Is buying gravel in bags or bulk cheaper?

Bulk is almost always much cheaper per cubic yard. Bags only make sense for tiny patches or where delivery is impossible.
