Pea Gravel Calculator
Pea gravel is sold by volume and weight — get both numbers, plus bag counts, before you order.
How to use the Pea Gravel Calculator
- Measure the area to be covered.
- Enter depth: 2 in for paths over a base, 3 in if it sits directly on soil/fabric.
- Compare bag vs bulk pricing with the optional cost fields.
Formula & methodology
Volume = Area × Depth. Pea gravel density ≈ 96 lb/ft³ (about 1.3 tons per cubic yard). Bag count uses 0.5 cu ft bags (~50 lb).
Example
A 10 ft × 8 ft seating area at 3 in: 80 ft² × 0.25 ft = 20 ft³ ≈ 0.74 cu yd — about 1 ton, or 40 bags of 0.5 cu ft.

FAQ
Is pea gravel good for walkways?
It is attractive and drains well, but it shifts underfoot and is hard to shovel. For main walkways, compacted gravel or pavers are more practical; pea gravel suits secondary paths and sitting areas.
How much pea gravel for a dog run?
Usually 2–3 inches over landscape fabric. Enter your run dimensions and depth — this calculator sizes it instantly.
What is under pea gravel?
Landscape fabric over compacted soil, ideally with edging to contain the gravel — it migrates without borders.
How deep is pea gravel for a fire pit area?
2–3 inches is typical over fabric, with steel edging. Avoid using it inside the fire pit itself where it can pop when heated.
