How to use the Playground Mulch Calculator

  1. Measure the full use-zone area around the equipment, not just under the swings.
  2. Enter 9–12 in depth (many installers target 12 in to allow settling).
  3. Use the bulk (cu yd) figure — bags are rarely practical at this volume.

Formula & methodology

Volume = Area × Depth. Note: EWF compacts ~20–25% after rain and play — order 25% extra or start at 12 in. Bag count uses 2 cu ft bags.

Example

A 20 ft × 20 ft use zone at 9 in: 400 ft² × 0.75 ft = 300 ft³ ≈ 11.1 cu yd of engineered wood fiber.

FAQ

How deep should playground mulch be?

A common benchmark is 9 inches of compressed engineered wood fiber for fall heights up to ~7 ft (CPSC guidance). Many playgrounds install at 12 in to offset natural compaction. Verify the spec of your surfacing product and equipment fall height.

What is the use zone?

The surfaced area extending at least 6 ft in all directions from equipment (more for swings and slides). Measure that whole rectangle.

Regular mulch vs engineered wood fiber?

Only engineered wood fiber (EWF) is rated for playground impact attenuation. Landscape mulch and wood chips are not certified surfacing.

How often do I top up playground mulch?

Check depth every season — high-traffic spots (swing bays, slide exits) hollow out fast. Annual top-ups of 1–2 inches are typical.

Note: Depth guidance here follows common industry practice, not a certification. Confirm required surfacing depth against your equipment fall height and local regulations.
