How to use the Rubber Mulch Calculator

  1. Measure the area you are covering.
  2. Enter depth — 1.5–2 in is typical for landscape rubber mulch over fabric.
  3. Rubber mulch bags are usually 0.8 cu ft — match the select field to your product.

Formula & methodology

Volume = Area × Depth. Rubber mulch weighs ~45 lb/ft³ (about twice wood mulch) but is sold by volume. A 0.8 cu ft bag covers ~9.6 ft² at 1 in.

Example

A 10 ft × 8 ft bed at 2 in: 16 ft³ ≈ 0.6 cu yd — twenty 0.8 cu ft bags.

FAQ

How deep should rubber mulch be in landscaping?

1.5–2 inches is enough because it does not decompose. You are blocking weeds, not feeding soil — use fabric underneath for best results.

Does rubber mulch smell in summer heat?

Quality brands have little odor; cheap shredded-tire mulch can smell on very hot days near sealed windows. Virgin rubber products cost more but are cleaner.

Is rubber mulch safe for plants?

It does not add nutrients and some studies note zinc accumulation. Best for beds where low maintenance matters more than soil health; keep it off vegetable gardens.

How long does rubber mulch last?

Ten years or more without topping up — its main advantage over wood mulch, which needs refreshing every 1–2 years.
